Remodelers Council Meets Wednesday
With Discussion on Avoiding Litigation

Under the leadership of Chairman Jerry McFarland, CIP, the TBA Remodelers Council will meet this Wednesday (April 30) at 11:30 am at the TBA office where the Roundtable discussion will focus on avoiding litigation… and dealing with various legal issues faced by remodelers. Lunch is free to Council members and $20 for non-members. The discussion will be moderated by TBA member and Tallahassee attorney Bobby Long of the Rumberger, Kirk & Caldwell law firm. Long will highlight construction law challenges as well as employment-related rules like the recent Florida Supreme Court decision involving discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. Long will explain that employers should protect themselves against these new claims by treating all employees who are temporarily limited in a similar manner.

House-Senate Conferees Agree
On $167 Million for Sadowski

The Florida House and Senate agreed last week to fund the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund at $167.7 million next fiscal year, setting the stage for TBA and the Florida Home Builders Association to achieve one of its top legislative priorities for 2014. Senator Bill Montford (D-Tallahassee) was one of the first state legislators to call for funding of Sadowski. The Senate proposal earmarked the entire amount of affordable housing funds generated by doc stamps, which totaled $226 million. The House’s original position funded Sadowski at $89.3 million. The Transportation and Economic Development Budget Conference settled on the final figure after the Senate came down from its original position and the House agreed to increase its allocation. The funds had been swept into general revenue in recent years but affordable housing did receive a boost of $200 million last year as part of a $7.6 billion settlement with large banks over fraudulent foreclosure practices. This year’s sweep amounted to $58.5 million.

TBA’s Technology Seminar
Packs the House at Democrat

TBA’s members are a whole lot “tech-savvy” after attending last week’s Technology Seminar and general membership meeting at the Tallahassee Democrat. The educational event fulfilled the “vision” of Member Consumer Education Committee (MCEC) Chairman Stan Derzypolski, CIP, CAPS, of 3 Rivers, Inc. “We tried to present as many different aspects of technology as possible, including applications that builders are actually using in the field,” said Derzypolski. In fact, TBA Past Presidents Jerry McFarland, CIP and Ed Dion, CIP, CAPS, presented some of the more interesting apps related to measuring living spaces and designing remodeling projects. Mike Still of the Tallahassee Media Group (Tallahassee Democrat) shared insights on effective web sites and digital advertising and Greg Colovos of Mac and More Systems discussed mobile offices and linking various devices using cloud technology. Derzypolksi said that due to the rapid change in the digital world, at least one more tech-focused seminar would be presented later this year.

At Thursday’s GMM Luncheon

To help its members meet the challenge of change, the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) is devoting its Thursday (April 17) general membership meeting to a “Technology Seminar.” Hosted by the Tallahassee Democrat at its location at 277 North Magnolia Drive, the seminar features a wide range of topics and speakers, including Mike Still of the Tallahassee Media Group and Past TBA Presidents Jerry McFarland, CIP, and Ed Dion, CIP, CAPS. Still will speak on Google Analytics, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay-Per-Click online advertising, and Facebook advertising. McFarland will cover the “Magic Plan” app that measures living spaces and Dion will address the latest in computer-aided design (CAD).  Seating is limited, making RSVP’s required (to Jacqueline Hill at ). The cost of the catered lunch is $15 per person payable at door through cash, check or credit card. Parking is free and available in the Democrat lot (south side of the building). The course provides credit for TBA members who have achieved or are pursuing their Construction Industry Professional (CIP) designation.

Centennial Bank Among Lenders
Dedicated to Serve TBA Builders

Builder members of the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) are pleased to see a positive change in the construction and mortgage lending environment in Tallahassee as banks, mortgage companies and credit unions all appear to have a renewed interest in funding local housing activity. One of the lenders leading the charge is Centennial Bank, which recently sponsored the TBA Clay Target Shoot at Coon Bottom. “We appreciate the opportunity to support TBA,” said Centennial’s Market President Matt Brown, a longtime Tallahassee lender and loyal TBA member.  “Bringing the clay shoot back as a TBA event was a goal of ours this year and a way to say thank you to many of the builders we serve.” Brown is one of the local lenders optimistic about the future of the building industry in our area.  “What we’re seeing are builders who are very disciplined when it comes to hitting their price points and putting homes on the market that should sell quickly,” said Brown. “We’re seeing inventory absorption rates that give us the confidence to lend, even to the point of spec loans in the right locations around town.” For more on Centennial Bank and their culture of customer service, go to News at tallyba.com.

Hosts TBA Hard Hat Happy Hour

Mark your calendar for this Thursday evening (April 10, 5:30 pm to 7 pm) and drop by the Sunshine Savings Bank branch at 1400 East Park Avenue for the second TBA Hard Hat Happy Hour (HHHH) of the year. Sunshine Savings Bank will provide TBA members and their guests with food (from Hurricane Grill & Wings), drinks, and an atmosphere to relax and enjoy a good time of networking with peers, partners, and affiliates in the industry.  The first HHHH was held in March at SCP Distributors (pool supplies, outdoor landscapes, and outdoor appliances). In May, the event officially moves to the fourth (not necessarily the last) Thursday evening of every month with Hi-Tech System Associates, Inc. hosting on May 22 and Jenkins Brick on June 26. Be sure to mark those dates… and we’ll see you this Thursday evening at Sunshine Savings Bank.

The cost of the catered lunch is $15 per person payable at door through cash, check or credit card. Parking is free and available in the Democrat lot (south side of the building). The course provides credit for TBA members who have achieved or are pursuing their Construction Industry Professional (CIP) designation.
