FHBA’s Coveted ‘Eagle Award’

TBA Past President Karen Koelemij of Orange State Construction has been honored with a 2014 “Eagle Award” by Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) President Ron Lieberman. The award was presented at last week’s FHBA Fall Leadership Conference in Daytona Beach.  At FHBA, Karen is a Life Director and has served in many leadership roles, including Area I Builder Vice President and Chair of the Bylaws Committee. She has also served as State Representative and Area V National Area Chairman of NAHB, drawing her more than 20 years of NAHB Board experience and her status as a Senior Life Director. “Karen consistently steps up to help FHBA, NAHB and the Tallahassee BA,” said Lieberman. During the conference, David Perkins, CIP, CAPS, of Perkins Electric was honored for his two years of service as FHBA Area I Associate Vice President. The FHBA Board of Directors elected Vicki O’Neil of the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility to succeed Perkins in the position. SEBC Chairman Ed Dion, CIP, CAPS, of Dion Builders, and 2012 Florida Remodeler of the Year Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS of Capital City Builders also participated in the FHBA conference.

TBA Builder Member Jerry Linder
Installed as New FHBA President

Jerry Linder, who owns the Tallahassee-based custom home building firm of Vintage Homes, has been installed was the 2014-2015 President of the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA). Linder also owns the St. Augustine-based JL Linder Group, Inc. He is a Past President of the state’s largest local builders’ association – Northeast Florida BA – and served FHBA as an Area II Builder Vice President on the Executive Committee as well as chairman of the Industry Issues Committee, a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee, and Board member of FHB Insurance (FHBI), the insurance and risk management arm of FHBA. At TBA, Linder’s Vintage Homes has entered award-winning custom homes in the TBA Parade of Homes at Persimmon Hill the past two years.  Last year, Vintage was the builder of a Habitat for Humanity project in Tallahassee known as “The House That the House Built.” Linder coordinated the construction and the donations of materials and TBA support the project financially. “You can always count on Jerry,” says Lieberman. “He’s the type of person who sees a need and jumps right in and gets it done. He’s always there for FHBA and, no doubt, he’ll make a great President.”

County Commissioner John Dailey
Sees Opportunities in Blueprint 2000

If Leon County voters pass the penny sales tax extension on November 4, County Commissioner John Dailey thinks builders will be among the biggest beneficiaries. Meeting with leaders of the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) on October 14, 2014 for coffee at the Red-Eye Café in Midtown, Dailey said the millions of dollars earmarked for transportation infrastructure will yield opportunities and “re-create great areas to live.” He offered a caveat: his concern over an outdated comprehensive plan. “I’d scrap the current plan and start over,” said Dailey, who has served on the commission for the past eight years. “It’s also time to re-evaluate the Urban Services Area (USA) and start thinking strategically about our mass transit system and the communities of the future.” He said a workshop on the comprehensive plan is schedule for December 2014.  Dailey was pleased to hear positive feedback on the county’s permitting process, which is shifting to an electronic platform known as Projects Docs. “Local governments are working hard to be customer-friendly,” said Dailey. “We (Leon County Commissioners) encourage creative problem-solving.” The meeting was part of TBA’s ongoing dialogue with elected and appointed officials. Participating from TBA were President Masoud Karimipour, Government Affairs Committee Chair Alan Weekley, and TBA Past Presidents Tom Vieth and Mark Worley.

Green Building Council Learns
About the Best of Panasonic Fans

TBA’s Green Building Council continued its tradition of great speakers for its monthly meetings last week when Linda Scott of Panasonic Fans was the sponsor and presenter. Scott, the company’s southeastern marketing representative, said Panasonic made the first Energy Star®-rated fan and the first quiet fan. She said the Whispering Ceiling Fan is ideal for new construction and the Whisper Green Fan, first introduced in 2006, is geared to the remodeling industry. The product boasts a .0006 percent defect rate thanks to the company’s quality control commitment. Scott also talked about Panasonic’s DC motors which have multiple speeds and motion sensors and its Eco-Vent™ products which are distributed locally by TBA member Tallahassee Fan and Blind. The program was so well received that Scott was invited back to present at a TBA general membership meeting in 2015. For more on Panasonic fans, visit www.panasonic.com/ventfans. The next Green Council meeting is November 11, 2014 at 11:30 am at Myers Park Community Room where Norbord will be the sponsor and presenter.

Four Top TBA Professionals Star
In Remodelers Showcase Awards

Sponsored by the Tallahassee Builders Association’s Remodelers Council and the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility, TBA’s 2014 Remodelers Showcase Awards were dominated by four of the association’s top professionals. The major winners of the competition were Brandon Jett, CIP, of Jett Builders; Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS, of Capital City Builders; Alan Weekley, CIP, CAPS, of Alan Weekley Homes; and William “Kip” Carpenter, CIP, CAPS, of Carpenters Construction. Jett won three Gold Awards; Weekley and Strickland won two Gold Awards; and Carpenter won a Gold and a Silver Award. The four will be honored on October 16, 2014 during TBA’s monthly general membership meeting (11:30 am luncheon) at the Holiday Inn & Suites located at I-10 and North Monroe. Winners and their winning projects will be featured in upcoming editions of the TBA Weekly Report.

Southerland Hopes U.S. Senate
Will Take Up House-Passed Bill

Campaigning for re-election in Tallahassee last week, Rep. Steve Southerland (R-Florida) took time to visit with National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) BUILD-PAC Trustee Karen Koelemij of Orange State Construction and Tallahassee Builders Association President Masoud Karimipour and offer an update on the “Waters of the U.S.” bill he recently championed in the House. Southerland is in a tight race with Democrat Gwen Graham, the daughter of former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham. “We’re hopeful the Senate will take up H.R. 5078 (the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act) before the election or perhaps accept its language on another bill that the Senate would hear,” said Southerland. “But even if we don’t pass it this year, we’ll bring it right back in 2015.” The House passed the measure by a vote of 262 to 152 with the support of 35 Democrat members. The bill is designed to stop the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers proposed rule on “waters of the U.S.” and force the agencies to go back to the drawing board to craft a balanced rule that respects both congressional intent and Supreme Court precedent. Southerland said over 200 associations around the country expressed support for the pro-property rights bill, with NAHB leading the way.

Walker, Dozier and Remodeling Awards
Highlight TBA Meeting at New Location

TBA members won’t want to miss the next general membership meeting set for Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 11:30 am at a new location: the Holiday Inn & Suites located just north of I-10 on Monroe Street. In addition to the presentation of the 2014 Remodelers Showcase Awards (see item above), the event will feature two highly informative speakers: Claude Walker on the development activities at Summit East and Bannerman Crossing; and Leon County Commissioner Kristin Dozier on the proposed extension of the penny sales tax which will appear on the November 4 election ballot.  Walker is a native Floridian who has lived in Tallahassee most of his life. He’s a former CPA and a board-certified real estate attorney who oversees business operations of the Summit Group, the Summit East Technology Park, and the new commercial and residential development taking place on Bannerman Road. Dozier will explain the implications of the sales tax proposal as it relates to economic development, infrastructure expansion, and housing opportunities.

Brandon Jett Showcases His Skills
As Winner of Remodeling Awards

TBA is well-known for its many outstanding professional remodelers. Just to name a few… Ed Dion and Larry Wayne Strickland have won Florida Remodeler of the Year honors in the past and Kip Carpenter has captured the coveted Aurora Award for his remodeling excellence. Over 20 TBA remodelers have earned the Construction Industry Professional (CIP) and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation. But now, Brandon Jett, CIP, of Jett Builders is making his own name among TBA’s best by winning three Gold Awards in the 2014 TBA Remodelers Showcase Awards. Couldn’t happen to a nice guy. Brandon is a native of Tallahassee who began working in construction at age 20 and learned the business from the ground up. He credits his father’s example for his strong work ethic. He moved up to the carpenter’s crew then started doing repairs himself, setting the stage for him to form his own business, Jett Builders, which now does all phases of construction. Since 2004, he has built many custom homes and performed major remodeling work in the area. “There is no better feeling than having a satisfied customer,” says Brandon, “and knowing that I helped someone achieve their dream.”
