On Cutting Edge of Solar Energy
 In the TBA Member Spotlight this week is Independent Green Technologies (IGT) which is on the cutting edge of solar energy for residential and commercial applications. Announcer Keith Jones Optimistic
That Seminoles Can Win Title Again
It was hard for Sunshine Sports announcer and former Florida State University football player Keith Jones to mask his optimism at last week’s TBA general membership meeting when discussing the Seminoles’ 2014 season which opens Saturday in Dallas against Oklahoma State. “This year, it’s not physical, it’s mental… can the players have what Coach Jimbo Fisher calls ‘an attitude of dominance’ to go out and play to their tremendous ability,” said Jones. FSU went 14-0 last year and beat Auburn for their third national championship (the previous two under legendary coach Bobby Bowden). Jones, introduced by his friend and TBA Hall of Famer Drexal Harris of Baker-Harris Insurance, mixed in some down-home humor with his predictions for the coming year. He said the Clemson game was a key ACC match-up and that Notre Dame could present a challenge but the game he feared most was a Thursday night contest in Louisville where the weather could be brutal. But he fully expects the Seminoles to be in the four-team Bowl Championship Series playoffs and make a serious run at a repeat title. With primary elections set for Tuesday (August 26, 2014), the Political Action Committee of the Tallahassee Builders Association encourages members to vote for its endorsed eight candidates for local offices in Leon and Wakulla counties. Winning endorsements in Leon County and City of Tallahassee races were Weser Ra Ka Khufu (County Commission District 1), Nick Maddox (County Commission (At Large, Group 2), Andrew Gillum (City Mayor), Diana Oropallo (City Commission, Seat 2), and Nancy Miller and Steve Stewart (co-endorsements in City Commissioner, Seat 3). In Wakulla County, the Committee endorsed County Commissioner candidates Randy Merritt (an engineer and TBA member) and Jerry Moore.
TBA to Select a Builder Member
To Build Parade Showcase Home
The Tallahassee Builders Association is soliciting proposals from builder members in order to select the builder of the TBA Showcase Home in conjunction with the 2015 Parade of Homes. The Parade is scheduled for the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015. The selected builder will enjoy a wealth of publicity and promotional  benefits, including having the home prominently featured in the local media and on the cover of the official Parade of Homes magazine. In addition, the builder will have their home entered in the Parade of Homes at no fee. The builder will assume all responsibility and legal liability for the construction of the home and guarantee its availability during the Parade weekends. Because the Showcase Home is projected as a major source of non-dues revenue for TBA, the builder must be willing to coordinate and document donations and discounts of materials, products, and services to the home. The total sum of donations and discounts will be required to be paid by the builder to TBA immediately after the home sells. Fiber Cement Installation Seminar
Set for September 9 at the Democrat
TBA members… mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 9, 2014 when James Hardie Building Products presents a seminar on Fiber Cement Installation. The seminar will be held at 11:30 am at the Tallahassee Democrat education room at 277 Magnolia Drive (Tallahassee). The course is approved for one (general) hour of continuing education by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (Florida Home Builders Association Provider #0000916 and Course #0610761). The course will cover four aspects of fiber cement siding. First, the selection of the correct siding for your project will be discussed by determining the needs of the building such as water drainage, fire resistance and other physical properties that will be important. Then the class with go into detail around the makeup, performance and key features of fiber cement siding. Next, the class will learn how to determine the proper fastener to use depending on the local wind code. Last, the discussion will go into the best practices for safely cutting and installing fiber cement siding and trim. The instructor is Joshua Bondele of James Hardie.
Remodelers Showcase Awards
Deadline Is Tuesday September 2
 Members of TBA Remodelers Council can now enter their best work in the 2014 Remodelers Showcase Awards, which are sponsored by the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility. Last year’s winners received a ton of positive publicity from their success. Categories for entries include Kitchen, Bath, Home Rehabilitation, Creative Repair, Commercial, Detached Structures, Historic Restoration, Room Addition, Outdoor Spaces, and Green Home Renovation. Each category has three price breakdowns. The deadline for entries is now Tuesday, September 2, 2014 and the winners will be announced at the October 16, 2014 general membership meeting. The application will is also available on the TBA web site under News.

To Thursday’s TBA Luncheon at Killearn
 It’s upon us… the FSU football season and the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) general membership meeting luncheon  this Thursday (August 21) featuring Keith Jones as the guest speaker. Jones has been a part of the FSU football broadcast team for Sunshine Network television since its inception in 1988. The luncheon starts at 11:30 am at the Killearn Country Club. The cost is $15 per person, payable at the door through cash, check or credit card. New members attend free, thanks to the sponsorship of Prime Meridian Bank. Jones will assess the Seminoles’ upcoming football season. Fans who listen to Jones are amazed by his knowledge of the intricacies of football. What some fans may not know is that Jones was an outstanding member of the 1978-80 Florida State football teams. Some fans might  also be surprised to learn that Jones is one of the brightest student-athletes to have come through FSU's athletic program. So mark your calendar and plan to join your TBA family at what may be one of the highlight events of the year. Many thanks to Drexal Harris of Baker-Harris Insurance who lined up Jones for the presentation and will introduce him at the meeting.

Eight Candidates in Leon-Wakulla Elections
Meeting last week, the Political Action Committee of the Tallahassee Builders Association endorsed eight candidates for local offices in Leon and Wakulla counties. Winning endorsements in Leon County and City of Tallahassee races were Weser Ra Ka Khufu (County Commission District 1), Nick Maddox (County Commission (At Large, Group 2), Andrew Gillum (City Mayor), Diana Oropallo (City Commission, Seat 2), and Nancy Miller and Steve Stewart (co-endorsements in City Commissioner, Seat 3). TBA Leaders Represent Our Industry
At Chamber’s Community Conference
Don’t look now but the Tallahassee Builders Association is working hard to become a key partner with the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. That effort was in full force last week when four TBA leaders took part in the Chamber’s Annual Community Conference in Amelia Island. Leading the TBA delegation was President Masoud Karimipour, CIP, CAPS, of Persica Homes and First Vice President Alan Weekley, CIP, CAPS, of Alan Weekley Homes where they were joined by TBA/Chamber Board member Mike Roberts of Roberts Sand Company and TBA Immediate Past President Shane Lambert, CIP, CAPS, of Shane Lambert Construction. “Mike Roberts has been instrumental in facilitating TBA’s involvement in the Chamber and the benefits our participation are already paying off,” said Karimipour, who represents TBA on the Chamber Board this year and will be succeeded in that role by Weekley in 2015. “I was very impressed with the conference on a number of levels,” said Weekley. “First, it’s very encouraging to see all segments of the community pulling together behind goals that will create a more positive business climate. Second, for TBA, it’s important that we be seen as positive contributors toward those goals. The more we’re involved (with the Chamber), the more people will understand and respect the importance our industry has to the community.” The hot topic at the conference was the November referendum on the extension of the penny sales tax that under the City-County Blueprint 2000 plan would provide over $200 million for infrastructure and $90 million for economic development. For details on how the penny sales tax would be used, visit www.leonpenny.org. “I believe the business community feels this could be a ‘game-changer’ for our local economy,” said Karimipour. “It may also hold the key to opening the Welaunee property for residential development, which, as builders, we desperately need.” TBA and the Chamber have reciprocal memberships.

FSU Football Commentator Keith Jones
To Speak at August 21 TBA Luncheon

A $1,000 Cost Increase Deprives
279 Tallahassee Families a Home
  Writing in the August 9, 2014 issue of the Tallahassee Democrat’s newly-formatted Homefinder.com real estate section, TBA President Masoud Karimipour, CIP, CAPS, of Persica Homes, said a new National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) study shows the impact of excessive fees that drive the cost of a new home up by $1,000. Nationwide, the impact prices 206,000 prospective buyers out of the market. When Karimipour applied the formula to the Tallahassee area – where the median home price is just over $220,000 and the median household income is $56,798 – the $1,000 increase prices 279 would-be homebuyers out of the market. And with what home building means to our local economy, 279 less homes built translates into the loss of almost 1,000 jobs in the construction industry. TBA enjoys a solid working relationship with our elected officials and our local building officials, wrote Karimipour, and in a constructive way TBA identifies regulatory costs that make it more difficult for our builders to provide affordable housing, especially for first-time homebuyers and middle-income families.
TBA Sets Two Showcase Homes;
Seeking Builder for Spring Home
 The Tallahassee Builders Association has plans to build two Showcase Homes for public viewing between now and the 2015 Parade of Homes. The first home will be built by Premier Fine Homes and be ready for showing during the 2014 Christmas holiday season. That home will be in Buckhead and linked to a charity, according to Member and Consumer Education Committee (MCEC) Chairman Stan Derzypolski, CIP, CAPS. The second Showcase Home will be displayed during the 2015 Parade of Homes (the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17) and TBA is currently soliciting a builder for that home. If you are interested in building the Showcase Home in conjunction with the 2015 Parade, send an email to Executive Officer Paul Thompson at and he will provide you the qualifying criteria and selection process information. Both homes will offer the latest and best in new-home construction, drawing on the products, services, and expertise of TBA’s associate members.

2015 Parade of Homes Chairman
 Award-winning builder-remodeler Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS, of Capital City Builders has been named the Chairman of the Tallahassee Builders Association’s 2015 Parade of Homes Committee. Strickland won a Silver Award in TBA’s 2014 Parade and was named Florida’s Remodeler of the Year in 2012 by the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA). The Parade will be held the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015.

TBA Sets Two Showcase Homes;
Seeking Builder for Spring Home
The Tallahassee Builders Association has plans to build two Showcase Homes for public viewing between now and the 2015 Parade of Homes. The first home will be built by Premier Fine Homes and be ready for showing during the 2014 Christmas holiday season. That home will be in Buckhead and linked to a charity, according to Member and Consumer Education Committee (MCEC) Chairman Stan Derzypolski, CIP, CAPS. The second Showcase Home will be displayed during the 2015 Parade of Homes (the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17) and TBA is currently soliciting a builder for that home. If you are interested in building the Showcase Home in conjunction with the 2015 Parade, send an email to Executive Officer Paul Thompson at and he will provide you the qualifying criteria and selection process information. Both homes will offer the latest and best in new-home construction, drawing on the products, services, and expertise of TBA’s associate members.
Larry Wayne Strickland Named
2015 Parade of Homes Chairman
Award-winning builder-remodeler Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS, of Capital City Builders has been named the Chairman of the Tallahassee Builders Association’s 2015 Parade of Homes Committee. Strickland won a Silver Award in TBA’s 2014 Parade and was named Florida’s Remodeler of the Year in 2012 by the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA). The Parade will be held the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015.
James Hardie Offers Seminar
On Fiber Cement Installation
TBA members… mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 9, 2014 when James Hardie Building Products presents a seminar on Fiber Cement Installation. The seminar will be held at 11:30 am at the Tallahassee Democrat education room at 277 Magnolia Drive (Tallahassee). The course is approved for one hour of continuing education by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (Florida Home Builders Association Provider #0000916 and Course #0610761). Look for more details in a future newsletter.
FSU Football Commentator Keith Jones
To Speak at August 21 TBA Luncheon
Keith Jones, who has been a part of the FSU football broadcast team for Sunshine Network television since its inception in 1988, will be the featured speaker at the Tallahassee Builders Association’s Thursday, August 21, 2014 general membership meeting. The luncheon begins at 11:30 am. The location is to be announced soon. Jones will assess the Seminoles’ upcoming football season. Fans who listen to Jones are amazed by his knowledge of the intricacies of football. What some fans may not know is that Jones was an outstanding member of the 1978-80 Florida State football teams. Some fans might also be surprised to learn that Jones is one of the brightest student-athletes to have come through FSU's athletic program. So mark your calendar and plan to join your TBA family at what may be one of the highlight events of the year. Many thanks to Drexal Harris of Baker-Harris Insurance for lining up Keith to make this special TBA presentation.
Remodelers Showcase Awards
Extend Deadline to September 2
Members of TBA Remodelers Council can now enter their best work in the 2014 Remodelers Showcase Awards, which are sponsored by the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility. Last year’s winners received a ton of positive publicity from their success. Categories for entries include Kitchen, Bath, Home Rehabilitation, Creative Repair, Commercial, Detached Structures, Historic Restoration, Room Addition, Outdoor Spaces, and Green Home Renovation. Each category has three price breakdowns. The deadline for entries is now Tuesday, September 2, 2014 and the winners will be announced at the October 16, 2014 general membership meeting. The application will is also available on the TBA web site under News.
