TBA Showcase Home Provides
A Huge Boost to Toys for Tots

The Tallahassee Builders Association wishes to express its sincere thanks to the Tallahassee community for their support of our 2014 Showcase Home, which resulted in more than 450 Christmas gifts being donated to Toys for Tots. In addition, TBA’s Board of Directors – inspired by a challenge from Past President Mark Worley – personally donated 33 bicycles to Toys for Tots in conjunction with the Showcase Home. TBA wishes to thank our friends at the Tallahassee Board of Realtors® who supported TBA in this initiative. Much credit as well must go to Premier Fine Homes for building the beautiful Showcase Home in the Buckhead community off Centerville Road. Nearly a thousand people toured the innovative home during the weekend it was open to the public. And, of course, a huge thank you is owed to the donors to the home (listed below) who provided the quality products and services that truly made the home a showcase for the best in new-home living.

Tallahassee Kitchen Center Shines In Service to Builders, Remodelers Just like the magnificent kitchens they design for builders, remodelers and consumers, the Tallahassee Kitchen Center’s family business – consisting of Paul Sr., Susan, Paul Jr., and Katie Grabowski – is full of personality, brimming with bright ideas, and geared for performance. They’re loyal TBA members, serving on the Parade of Homes™ Committee, and faithfully attending meetings for education and networking. “TBA has been a great way to maintain existing relationships and build new ones,” says Susan, who with her husband Paul bought Tallahassee Kitchen Center in 1980. All four of Paul and Susan’s children worked at one time in the business and today daughter Katie is a design specialist and Paul Jr. has the responsibility of making the conceptual drawings into reality by being in charge of the jobsite original measurements and the installation of the cabinetry. Paul Sr. handles the detailed computer drawings and is an advisor of the projects from beginning to end from behind the scenes. Susan went to school to sharpen her bookkeeping skills, started attending kitchen design seminars, and eventually earned the coveted Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) designation from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), and for six years was a National Representative for the NKBA. Tallahassee Kitchen Center specializes in factory-built, quality custom cabinetry and countertops, and they’ve earned the trust of many of TBA’s leading builders and remodelers.  When builders or remodelers send their clients to Tallahassee Kitchen Center for design ideas, they know they’re in good hands. 2015 Parade of Homes™ Kicks Off
With Builders, Sponsors Welcomed

Planning for TBA’s 2015 Parade of Homes™ is well underway thanks to a hard-working Committee chaired by Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS of Capital City Builders. The Committee’s current focus is encouraging builders to enter a home or homes in the Parade, which runs the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015. The other priority is lining up sponsors. Early sponsor commitments (in alphabetical order) are Bobby Dollar Appliance Consultants, Capital City Bank, Centennial Bank, City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility, Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), Hancock Bank, Perkins Electric, Prime Meridian Bank, Superlube Auto Service, and Tallahassee State Bank. The deadline for builders to earn the early-bird discount is January 15, 2015, which is also the date of TBA’s first general membership meeting of 2015 at the Holiday Inn & Suites at I-10 and North Monroe. TBA Showcase Home Huge Hit
In the Tallahassee Community

Tallahassee-area residents just enjoyed a beautiful weekend and many of them made their way to the community of Buckhead where Premier Fine Homes was displaying the Tallahassee Builders Association’s 2014 Showcase Home. TBA Remodelers Fish Fry Set
For Tuesday at Old Town Café

The TBA Remodelers Council, chaired by Past President Jerry McFarland, CIP, of James McFarland Builder, Inc., will hold its last meeting of 2014 on Tuesday (December 16) with a Fish Fry Social sponsored by Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS, of Capital City Builders. The event will be held at 11:30 am at the Old Town Café on Timberlane Road. Council members and guests are welcome to attend. After the luncheon, the Council will look back on its successful programs of 2014 and ahead to potential seminar topics and speaker events.  
 

White’s Plumbing Team Wins
Big at TBA Golf Tournament

A fun time was had by all last week when TBA’s weather-postponed Don “Smokey” Young Memorial Golf Tournament was finally played at Golden Eagle. First Place Gross honors went to the White’s Plumbing team of Chris White, David Flury, Jamie Allday, and Daren Newlin, who collectively shot a 58. First Place Net went to Talquin Portables – Mike Dodson, Steve Dodson, Jeremy Smith, and Tim Potter – who shot 52. Second Place Gross went to the James Hardie Building Products team of Jason Coleman, Joey Charron, Vic Vickers, and Matt Hewitt, shooting a 63. And Second Place Net was Air Control with Morris Suber, Dallas Strickland Curt Starlow, and Duke Touchton shooting 64. Vickers had the closest to the pin shot and Jeff Knauff of Nichiha Fiber Cement (see his Member Profile below) had the longest drive. New TBA Senior Officer Matt Gilbert of James D A Holley & Company won the putting contest sponsored by Nichiha with Touchton finishing second and Kyle Phelps of Capital City Bank in third. TBA’s Rescheduled Golf Tourney
Tees Off Tuesday at Golden Eagle

TBA’s annual Don “Smokey” Young Memorial Golf Tournament was rained out on November 17 and has been rescheduled for Tuesday (December 9) at the Golden Eagle Country Club. Lead the List of TBA’s 2014 Achievers

Sponsored by the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility (see Member Spotlight on City Gas’s Vicki O’Neil below), the Tallahassee Builders Association’s 57th Annual Awards/Installation Banquet was held last week at the swanky Hotel Duval where TBA crowned its top achievers for 2014. Leading the list was new TBA Hall of Fame member Jerry McFarland, CIP, of James McFarland Builder; co-Builders of the Year Doug Barton, CIP, CAPS, of Barton Construction, and Masoud Karimipour, CIP, CAPS, of Persica Homes; 2014 Associate Member of the Year Mike Roberts and Roberts Sand Company; co-President’s Award winners Bobby Dollar of Bobby Dollar’s Appliance Consultants and Thomas Asbury, Jr. of Premier Fine Homes. Vicki O’Neil and City Gas Provide Leadership and Support for TBA When it comes to associate members who make a difference at the Tallahassee Builders Association, Vicki O'Neil and the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility rise to the top of the list. Vicki has served on the TBA Board of Directors this year as Third Vice President and advances to Second Vice President – highest rank for an associate member at TBA – on December 4, 2014. She has worked with the Natural Gas Utility since 2008 and is responsible for natural gas sales and marketing as well as regulatory compliance issues. Before coming to the City of Tallahassee, Vicki served 15 years as the Chief of LP Gas Inspections for the State of Florida, responsible for the safety regulation and oversight of the state's propane industry. She sits on a number of industry committees within the Florida Natural Gas Association and the American Public Gas Association, and is an officer of the Big Bend Clean Cities Coalition. With her support, the Natural Gas Utility in 2015 will be entering its third year as a Platinum sponsor of TBA, with investments in the North Florida Home Show, the Parade of Homes, the Remodelers Showcase Awards, and the Awards Installation Banquet. The utility is also donating gas lights and a grille for an outdoor cooking area to the 2014 TBA Showcase Home being built by Premier Fine Homes in Buckhead. Vicki is proud of her team which includes business development representatives Larisa Kuleshova (commercial) and Deb Weir (residential) and the fact that 83 percent of the new construction in our area utilizes natural gas. "We enjoy our partnership with TBA and look forward to continuing it," said Vicki, who reminds builders to check out the natural gas rebate programs at www.talgov.com.

The Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) is proud to present its 2014 Showcase Home, built by Premier Fine Homes, for public viewing on the weekend of December 13-14, 2014. 2015 Parade of Homes™ Kicks Off
With Builders, Sponsors Welcomed

Planning for TBA’s 2015 Parade of Homes™ is well underway thanks to a hard-working Committee chaired by Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS of Capital City Builders. The Committee’s current focus is encouraging builders to enter a home or homes in the Parade, which runs the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015. The other priority is lining up sponsors. Early sponsor commitments (in alphabetical order) are Bobby Dollar Appliance Consultants, Capital City Bank, Centennial Bank, City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility, Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), Hancock Bank, Perkins Electric, Prime Meridian Bank, Superlube Auto Service, and Tallahassee State Bank. The deadline for builders to earn the early-bird discount is January 15, 2015, which is also the date of TBA’s first general membership meeting of 2015 at the Holiday Inn & Suites at I-10 and North Monroe. The Parade is generally considered the most powerful marketing tool that a builder can use, consistently resulting in large numbers of buyers and prospects for new homes. Once again this year, Homes & Land Magazine of Tallahassee will be producing the official Parade of Homes publication.
