Builders Present Showcase Home
As Holiday Boost for Toys-for-Tots

This holiday season, the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) is offering a special gift to the community… a beautiful Showcase Home where visitors will have the opportunity to make donations to Toys-for-Tots just in time for Christmas. Built by Premier Fine Homes, the 3,000-square-foot home in the beautiful Buckhead community (off Centerville Road three miles north of Capital Circle) will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14. In addition to highlighting the latest in new-home products and services, the 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath home is the drop-off point for toys for children who otherwise may not enjoy Christmas cheer. “Our goal is to fill up the garage with toys,” said Thomas Asbury, Jr., Director of Operations for Premier’s residential division. “We know the community will respond to bring joy to the lives of children during the holidays.” TBA President Masoud Karimipour, CIP, CAPS of Persica Homes says the association’s Board of Directors will donate 15 bicycles to Toys-for-Tots in conjunction with the Showcase Home. Asbury said the home features the best of cutting-edge trends provided by some of the TBA’s leading building suppliers and specialty contractors. In addition, Jeff Doxsee, an exclusive sales representative of Premier Homes and the 2014 President of the Tallahassee Board of Realtors®, has announced that TBR will assist TBA in collecting toys for the Showcase Home.

2015 Parade of Homes™ Kicks Off
With Builders, Sponsors Welcomed

Planning for TBA’s 2015 Parade of Homes™ is well underway thanks to a hard-working Committee chaired by Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP, CAPS of Capital City Builders. The Committee’s current focus is encouraging builders to enter a home or homes in the Parade, which runs the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17, 2015. The other priority is lining up sponsors. Early sponsor commitments (in alphabetical order) are Bobby Dollar Appliance Consultants, Capital City Bank, Centennial Bank, City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility, Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), Hancock Bank, Perkins Electric, Prime Meridian Bank, Superlube Auto Service, and Tallahassee State Bank. The deadline for builders to earn the early-bird discount is January 15, 2015, which is also the date of TBA’s first general membership meeting of 2015 at the Holiday Inn & Suites at I-10 and North Monroe. The Parade is generally considered the most powerful marketing tool that a builder can use, consistently resulting in large numbers of buyers and prospects for new homes. Once again this year, Homes & Land Magazine of Tallahassee will be producing the official Parade of Homes publication. The Parade of Homes Award Banquet is Thursday evening, May 14, 2015. For information on entering or sponsoring, see the forms listed under News at tallyba.com or call Parade Sponsorship Chairman David Perkins, CIP, CAPS of Perkins Electric at 251-7600. The next Parade of Homes Committee meeting is Tuesday, December 2, 2014. All Parade meetings are generously hosted by Hancock Bank at their Mahan Drive location.

Note: The Member Spotlight will return December 8, 2014 with a profile of Nichiha’s Jeff Knauf and December 15, 2014 with Susan and Katie Grabowski of the Tallahassee Kitchen Center.

Norbord’s David Lewis Solid Source
Of Green Building Info and Insights

The term “expert” gets used somewhat loosely these days but certainly not in the case of David Lewis, the Marketing Manager for Norbord Industries, Inc. Based in Orlando, Lewis is an engineer and TBA member who travels the Southeast teaching builders and construction-related professionals how to use OSB in ways that enhance energy efficiency and lower utility costs. Lewis was in Tallahassee last week to sponsor the monthly meeting of the TBA Green Building Council chaired by Jane Conn of ES Green & Company. “David is a tremendous source of information and insights on Green building,” says Conn. Prior to joining Norbord, Lewis spent 15 years with the American Plywood Association. During his presentation at TBA, Lewis focused on TallWall®, the company’s 4X10 and 4X9 OSB wall sheathing that features a 38 percent increase in wall strength with lower labor costs, less waste, and a reduced wall air leakage. He also touched on Solarbord, the company’s radian barrier sheathing. Lewis covered issues related to materials and construction practices that meet code requirements for wind-damage resistance and the differences between plywood and OSB. For more information, visit the Norbord web site at www.norbord.com or email Lewis directly at .

NAHB Blog: Consistent Message
Helps Get Attention of Realtors

“Builders Helping Builders” is an interactive blog post that allows National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) members to tap into the vast knowledge and experience of the entire membership in one convenient location. Each week, a new question – submitted by an NAHB member – is featured Monday Morning Briefing at http://www.nahb.org/publication_details.aspx?publicationID=774. A recent question was: I send Realtors promotions via mail and email all the time, but I haven’t really noticed a difference in buyer traffic. Is there a best, better, or tried-and-true way to get Realtors to pay attention to my promos and show my properties? One answer came from longtime sales and marketing expert S. Robert August, who responded: “Marketing to Realtors and real estate brokers is an important part of every marketing program regardless of the size or location of your community. Consistency of message is also important. Monthly eblasts and newsletters are essential to the entire campaign in addition to phone calls. Let these real estate brokers know that you are working with other real estate brokers and their companies. Include photos of real estate brokers receiving checks from your company. Pay commissions on the gross purchase price of your agreement. Create special events inviting all of the real estate brokers in your community. Do not invite a few real estate brokers from several offices. The others who have not been invited will boycott your community.” To ask a question about an home building-related challenges important to you, send an email to .

Vicki O’Neil and City Gas Provide
Leadership and Support for TBA

When it comes to associate members who make a difference at the Tallahassee Builders Association, Vicki O'Neil and the City of Tallahassee Natural Gas Utility rise to the top of the list. Vicki has served on the TBA Board of Directors this year as Third Vice President and advances to Second Vice President – highest rank for an associate member at TBA – on December 4, 2014. She has worked with the Natural Gas Utility since 2008 and is responsible for natural gas sales and marketing as well as regulatory compliance issues. Before coming to the City of Tallahassee, Vicki served 15 years as the Chief of LP Gas Inspections for the State of Florida, responsible for the safety regulation and oversight of the state's propane industry. She sits on a number of industry committees within the Florida Natural Gas Association and the American Public Gas Association, and is an officer of the Big Bend Clean Cities Coalition. With her support, the Natural Gas Utility in 2015 will be entering its third year as a Platinum sponsor of TBA, with investments in the North Florida Home Show, the Parade of Homes, the Remodelers Showcase Awards, and the Awards Installation Banquet. The utility is also donating gas lights and a grille for an outdoor cooking area to the 2014 TBA Showcase Home being built by Premier Fine Homes in Buckhead. Vicki is proud of her team which includes business development representatives Larisa Kuleshova (commercial) and Deb Weir (residential) and the fact that 83 percent of the new construction in our area utilizes natural gas. "We enjoy our partnership with TBA and look forward to continuing it," said Vicki, who reminds builders to check out the natural gas rebate programs at www.talgov.com.

Leon Penny Sales Tax Passes While
Onerous Wakulla Ordinance Fails

It was generally a good day at the ballot box for TBA and the area’s business community last Tuesday as voters in Leon County passed the penny sales tax extension to fund Blueprint 2000 and Wakulla County voters rejected a local ordinance that would have created development nightmares. The sales tax extension will support some $800 million in infrastructure improvements and economic development initiatives over the next 20 years. The proposed Wakulla ordinance would have created regulatory barriers related to areas affected by so-called “Waters of the U.S.,” an EPA rule being promulgated under the Clean Water Act. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the election was Gwen Graham’s victory over two-term Florida Congressman Steve Southerland, who had the support of TBA and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Graham is the daughter of former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham.

Member Spotlight

Worley, Trudeau Reach Milestones
In Their Member Recruiting Efforts

This week’s Members Spotlight salutes a dynamic duo… TBA Past Presidents Mark Worley of Worley Construction and Mark Trudeau of Trudeau Fine Homes. As successful as they both are as builders, they have taken the time to earn significant professional designations. They both are CIPs (Construction Industry Professionals) through TBA and CAPS (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists) from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Worley has taken professionalism one step further, becoming the only builder in Tallahassee to earn the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation. All three of the designations involve classroom time, intense study, and a rigorous exam. Worley is a former Chairman of the TBA Parade of Homes and continues to serve on the Parade Committee, including teaching a post-Parade Home Buying Seminar for consumers. Trudeau is an active member of the Member and Consumer Education Committee (MCEC), Green Building Council, and Remodelers Council. Worley and Trudeau, who both serve on the TBA Board of Directors, recently reached membership milestones: Worley having recently passed the 400 mark in new members recruited and Trudeau passing the 150 new-member-recruitment threshold. TBA thanks Mark and Mark for their re-MARK-able dedication.

Penny Sales Tax Key Decision
For Leon County Voters Tuesday

Voters in Leon County have a big decision to make when they go the polls on Tuesday, perhaps even bigger than the heated Governor’s race. On the ballot is the Penny Sales Tax issue, an extension of the one-cent sales tax that would be earmarked for some $800 million in infrastructure improvements and economic development initiatives over the next 20 years. As part of Blueprint 2000 – a joint effort by city and county officials – most of the new funds would be used to improve local roads. It’s estimated that 20 percent of the money raised will come from people who do not live in Leon County. For a guide to the overall election, including candidates supported by the Florida Home Builders Association, see the information below.

Whether you have your absentee ballot, plan to access early polling places or show up to the polls on the regularly scheduled election day (Tuesday, November 4), as a member of the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) it is important that you be armed with the knowledge of who your peers serving on local, state and national political action committees support for office. The link below provides a list of State Legislative and Congressional candidates by FHBA Area. For more information on HBA supported candidates in local races,  please contact your area builders association.  Visit the Site >>

TBA Nominating Committee Seeks
Candidates for 2015 Leader Positions

The Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) is looking for a few good men and women to be part of its leadership body. This year’s Nominating Committee is chaired by Past President Shane Lambert, CIP, CAPS, of Shane Lambert Construction and Committee members are President Masoud Karimipour, CIP, CAPS, of Persica Homes and David Perkins, CIP, CAPS, of Perkins Electric. TBA has two Senior Officer positions open in 2015: Third Vice President (which must be filled for an associate, or non-builder member) and Secretary (which must be a builder member). Traditionally, the Third VP advances to Second VP the following year and remains a Senior Officer for one more year as Immediate Past Second VP. The Secretary typically advances to Treasurer, First Vice President, then President. If you have an interest in these positions, or a seat on the Board of Directors, email Shane at and he will answer questions and arrange a full interview with the Nominating Committee.

Brian Will’s New Invention:
A SideArm Rack for Trucks

Members of the TBA Remodelers Council got a sneak preview last week of an exciting new product and couldn’t sign up fast enough to purchase it. A provisionally patented invention by TBA Past President Brian Will, CIP, CAPS, of New South Homes and his partner, Ken Kneipmann, the product is a SideArm Rack being marketed and manufactured by Wild Goose Industries, LLC. The innovative Rack twists, locks, and loads onto the side of a truck to easily haul large or unwieldy cargo and building materials. “Clamp-on or rack systems have not provided safe, viable options for builders,” said Will. “The SideArm Rack protects interior and exterior surfaces, deploys in seconds, loads and unloads easily, and is conveniently stored within the vehicle.” Will and Kneipmann answered questions about the product, which retails for $160. If you have an interest in a SideArm Rack for your vehicle, e-mail Will at .
